- Began research in 1966 on the metabolism of phosphoinositide lipids in connection with biological signalling and nerve function. Subsequent research has related to the metabolism and function of acyl lipids.
- Current areas of interest include medical aspects of lipids (pulmonary surfactant, peritoneal dialysis, endotoxic shock, inflammation, role of dietary lipids in arthritis and Alzheimers), agricultural aspects (herbicides, control of metabolism, oil quality) and environmental effects (temperature, atmosphere constituents, heavy metals and xenobiotics).
- Author of some 480 scientific publications including three books (Lipids in Plants and Microbes (with N.J. Russell), George Allen and Unwin, 1984; Lipid Biochemistry (with M.I. Gurr), 4th edition, Chapman and Hall, 1991), 5th edition (with M.I. Gurr and K.N. Frayn; Blackwells, 2002) and 13 edited volumes.
