I have been taking two High Strength cod liver oil capsules a day for the past three years. Although I have definitely noticed a benefit (at age 55 my knees and hips no longer give me twinges and my skin looks a lot better), I have put on around half a stone. Do you think this is the fault of the oil?
All fats have a relatively high calorific content and, as you probably know, if your food intake contains more calories than you use up as energy then the calories can be stored as fat. Traditional advice is to look at your diet as a whole rather than blame a single food. A 500mg cod liver oil contributes only 5 calories to your total daily intake. As you have noticed an improvement in your health and appearance, I would have thought cod liver oil would be one of the last food items to drop. If you base your diet on carbohydrates, eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables daily and stick to low-fat meats and dairy foods, you should quickly lose the extra half stone. Evidence also suggests that the long-chain Omega-3 oils actually help maintain correct body weight. Research is ongoing.
