Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an auto-immune disease that can affect anyone from young children to people in their nineties. An immune system defect allows the body to attack its own tissue, resulting in inflammation usually in the lining of the joints, but it can sometimes occur in other parts of the body.

Early research concentrated on rheumatoid rather than osteo-arthritis as inflammation is the primary symptom. There is now an accumulation of evidence to show that the long chain Omega-3 fatty acids can indeed reduce joint pain and stiffness and allow a reduction in dosage of the aspirin-like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that can damage the stomach lining. A overall survey of 10 double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised trials confirmed that Fish Oil taken for three months was indeed associated with a reduction in joint tenderness and morning stiffness.
