Research

In the Beginning

[ 1 | 2 ]

Scientists made one of the first associations between Omega-3s and human health while studying the Inuit (Eskimo) people of Greenland who suffered far less from certain diseases (Heart Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diabetes, Psoriasis) than their European counterparts. Yet their diet was very high in fat from eating whale, seal and salmon. Eventually researchers realised that these foods were all rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which provided real disease-countering benefits.

Since then, researchers worldwide have continued to explore the health implications of dietary Omega-3 fatty acids, with significant success in many areas. The breadth of positive research is so vast that only those health areas supported by a significant body of positive evidence are covered on this site in any detail. Otherwise, references will be supplied to papers whose findings suggest a useful role for dietary Omega-3s but require further evidence.
